Piecing together what culture truly means in the terms of Rowlett High School, it’s a deep dive into the diverse tapestry of local and community spirit.
School culture is best explained through how students interact with each other as well as the teachers and the atmosphere created through behavior, communication, and support in a school community.
“Rowlett’s culture is very accepting and open, in that students are encouraged to try new things and become better at what they want to,” sophomore Sierra Thompson said. “In my art classes, the teachers are there to guide students and provide advice but give the students creative freedom to make what they want.”
This shows how welcoming it is in terms of the behavior of people. This is something that builds a strong community and allows students to blossom in the way culture is perceived as a person from Rowlett. This also shows that the community is open to new ideas in terms of spreading the joy of art around our school.
Senior Lizeth Rodriguez says, “Some positive factors of going to Rowlett is how diverse the school is and also how there is some type of club, sport, and activities for anyone out there.”
Proving Rowlett is diverse in general activities. This is the emotional fabric that ties the school community together even if these groups create their own miniature communities. This shapes how students feel about school. Which is why, to fully understand the school’s culture is to find multiple points of view of what the culture is because at a general perspective all different angles can’t truly be seen.
Senior Angel Ramirez said, “Band culture always has very relaxed interactions between each person and the expectations are fun yet good in making us better players.” As well as a general perspective of our school he says, “Rowlett is special when it comes to the teachers it has in comparison to other schools, from my experience. I’ve heard many negatives from people at other schools and it makes me fortunate for who we have.”
The perspective is like a lens on a kaleidoscope shifting through the plates shows a new perspective of Rowlett and it’s something to experience in order to truly see what our school is. People tend to over exclude our school because of the simple fact that we tend to get a bad rep because of some of the more recent events that occurred at our school. This is something we shouldn’t let define us; our culture is a roaring fire from a little spark. Something huge that shouldn’t be overlooked, but unfortunately is.
“Others think most people from Rowlett work at a lower expectations than that of their schools because of the low values and the lack of special strengths,” Ramirez said.
