With a new semester comes new changes, but this year alone has been a notable change for many, leading to a big debate over one rule in particular: the tardy sweeps.
The school has decided to emphasize the presence of students during class time, along with scanning the hallways to make sure there is no one roaming around or trying to skip. Those who are caught have to face the consequence of spending the whole class period in room 1207. This leaves many people wondering if this change is truly for the better when it comes to our day-to-day life on campus, with many differing opinions over the matter.
Teachers who have duty in room 1207 discuss their opinions and how they feel about students and their frequent tardies.
“It’s a good policy. The kids gotta have some understanding that there’s no way around it,” Mr. Royal said. “There’s always exceptions, but other than that, it’s a pretty set-in-stone rule.”
“I think all students should be in class with their teachers, learning what they need to learn, and not in a holding area,” Mr. Grafford said.
Contrasting to the other perspective, students describe how they feel.
“I think it causes more of a disruption. You waste more time. It would’ve been easier being 2 minutes late to class. It’s stupid.” senior Kaitlin Jean said.
“They could be really good students, but on their record, it just says that they’re tardy a lot which makes colleges think they’re a bad student,” senior Jake Lee said. “Maybe the first five minutes after class starts, at THAT point, count them tardy. Definitely for first period give them more time.”
Now with the new policies being put into place, everyone at the school is learning to adjust to the new changes, leading to much more debates about the rule schoolwide than there were before. Regardless of whether this change is for the better or for the worse, the future of this school can only be told wit
