As the school year comes to a close, graduation and summer get closer. High school is often labeled as “The best years of your life” and “A time to make memories”, but do all students see it that way?
Many students have mixed feelings about graduation and their future, from a recent poll 80% said they hoped to go to college while 20% either said no or had mixed feelings.
Soon-to-be graduate and current senior Ximena Avila Velazquez said, “Some parts of it like events we have like football games and I’ll miss my friends” when asked if she was going to miss high school.
It is clear high school is an integral part of growing into an adult as well as a time to socialize and meet new people.
Out of the same poll, 72% of students said their high school experience so far has been great, and they have made a lot of memories.
However, not all students share this sentiment.
Junior Za’Niyah Simmons said, “It is not as the movies described it, junior year is very stressful. I don’t do anything fun and everything at this school you have to pay for.”
When the time for graduation arrives students start debating the possibility of attending college.
A study done by USA Today found that a majority of the 1,020 high school students surveyed said they’re unprepared for college, unsure what they will do after high school, and are thinking about how they will meet their basic needs while paying for college if they attend.
Whether students plan to attend college or go another route, high school students have the ability to shape their own futures and use their high school experience to push them forward to success.
