The rush you feel when you step into a stadium on a Friday night is one like no other, but when it comes to Texas weather, the environment can get hectic.
Repetitive lightning and light rain affected our first Friday game against South Grand Prairie. Before kickoff even came close, the varsity game was cancelled and rescheduled for 1pm the following day. While rescheduling give both teams a chance to play, it affects players’ mindsets.
“Knowing that you’re expecting to play, but then having the game rescheduled, kind of messes up your rhythm,” senior Peyton Keller said. “Especially when you’re already mentally prepared to play.”
Hearing the crowd roar, the band play, and cheering from the sidelines is what brings life to a high school football game. When there is none of that, it can discourage a team.
“Just feeling no one there, no band, no cheer, and no drill team. It was weird, definitely affects the energy there,” senior Grady Holmes said.
Players aren’t only affected by the bad weather or the injuries, but by the student section giving them motivation.
“It brings intensity and it brings confidence to the players when something good happens,” junior Ryan Hamilton said.
When they’re falling behind on the field it’s hard to keep spirits high, but our team has no trouble.
“I cheer my teammates on, be the loudest one on the benches, so I give it all I got,” junior Linebacker Isaiah Britt said.
After minor and major setbacks there’s a need to look back on mistakes and see what needs improvement. All in all, one game doesn’t define us as a team. What really defines us is how we come back together as a team. Better and stronger than before.
“I feel like we can improve more as a team,” junior Kahli Smith said. “Like watching film together and moving together; just being on the same page.”
