“I know I’m going to have kids, so I want to do anything to get them in the best hands and not see the dumb stuff that’s going around.”
Running back #28, senior Ger’myius Benson has always been a phenomenal family man. Even before he was in high school, he knew what his main priorities were going to consist of long-term.
“Let me say it like this: football is a yes, but it would be anything where I can help my mom live her dream,” Benson said.
Interestingly enough, he hadn’t always wanted to play football – which may come as a shock considering his highly productive high school career. Everything actually began with basketball and according to himself, Ger’myius was quite the baller – averaging around thirty points per peewee game.
“I didn’t really play sports until I moved here,” Benson said.
What’s this, he moved? Why thanks for asking, and yes indeed. Originally from Caruthersville, Missouri, Benson is a self-proclaimed country boy. He would often ride along with his relatives and family friends to watch them do their hunting. Additionally, at the tender age of seven, Ger’myius had his own four-wheeler.
But when he and his family moved to Texas, his freedoms changed.
“When you’re from the country, all you’re going to hear in the city is kidnapping,” Benson said.
Wary of the surroundings’ impact on her children, his mother would keep the kids inside for the most part and they would play a lot of board games. Germyius said it wasn’t that bad because it was fun to spend time with his family but he still didn’t have the same privileges as in Missouri. That’s why he didn’t particularly like Rowlett at first. In fact:
“I hated it,” he said.
Thankfully, his opinion has shifted over the years and he now agrees that Texas is the place to be.
“Texas is perfect because it gets cold around the time you want it to get cold, it gets hot right when you want it to be hot, and you don’t want too much rain,” Benson said.
