In a world divided by different view points and opinions, we often clash. With Rowlett having a student population of 2048, contrasting views on a subject is bound to happen.
The most notable example of this occurred this year, regarding the Immigrant and customs enforcement (ICE). Several GISD students planned a walkout on February 6th 2026 to protest against ICE. Students and staff all had different opinions on this walkout.
“I am for the students, but I am also a teacher and once you step onto Rowlett property we are responsible for your safety and we are just worried on how certain kids will act and how it could possibly endanger ya’ll,” Math teacher Mr. Odom said.
Many other students believed “skipping” was the only reason the walkout was even planned and several other students disagreed. Although different opinions were voiced during this time, it was important to remain persevered and stay peaceful.
“I think y’all are creating a possible danger issue because you’re going to have a lot of protesters protesting the protesters,” Social Studies teacher Mr.Steinfels said.
Students had a diverse outlook when it came to this topic. Some in favor, and others in opposition, whether it’s concerning safety or because of what the walkout stood for.
“I’m going to wear my trump shirt on the day everyone’s going to walk out, ” senior Grady Holmes said. When asked why, he responded “just for ragebait.”
There may be risks and opposition, but many students are still taking a chance for a safe, effective, peaceful walkout.
“I know our opinions are going to clash but we are going to try to be as peaceful as possible and hopefully anyone else who is protesting us does the same,” junior Daniel Delgado said.
