The prom committee handles all the decisions of theme, venues, food, and especially voting. The voting process has made this year’s nominees gain their votes using a different approach, and that leaves some people all for the idea and others tentative.
The nominees are based on those who have received the most canned goods from people donating them.
As opposed to the other years where it was just online voting, this year marks its first out of many. To know why this change occurred, the process and who is behind the decision-making process need to be understood.
”It felt more like a popularity contest where you could vote for anybody that you wanted, instead of people who really wanted it,” Senior Class President Isabelle Flores said.
The decision-making is a process where only the class council decides what ideas are good to continue on and what is not.
“I want to make sure that there are people from every clique to be represented when we make these decisions, so I asked people ‘Hey, what do we think about this?’ to make sure voting was done in a democratic way,” Class Officer Jania Long said. “We want to make sure that any ideas that we’re given, we always hear.”
Other people feel wary about the new voting process
“It should have been something that people voted on instead of them just making that decision,” senior Asher Tisdale said.
There are students who do like the idea of donating canned goods in exchange for votes.
“I absolutely love the idea,” Long said. “It’s so much to give back to the community. It shows the true spirit.”
The process of prom making is no easy feat, as they had to work with what was given to them.
“Because of budget, we had to decide on all the decorations and what we would use,” senior Juliana Reyes said. “We were just trying to be very broad with the decisions and letting our student body choose the food items and stuff like that.”
The goal behind the process and decisions, even if opinions are different, is to make prom an enjoyable and memorable celebration.
“It was going a little rocky at first, but now that we’re closer to it, it’s gonna be good. I think we’re gonna have a good prom,” Long said.
