As the softball season begins, the crowd wonders what times the games will be. Varsity will be at 6:00 pm, but wait. There’s a missing time slot for the Junior Varsity team. For the 25-26 Softball season there will be no junior varsity team.
There were many factors that have led to this decision.
“I think that most of our players were at a higher level this year, so we decided to just keep a varsity team and just have people try out for that too,” junior Baylee Grant said.
Others said the team was undersupplied.
“We had a lot of shortages of just girls trying out, and a lot of girls were busy with their schedules, so they left,” junior McKenna Hallman said.
Regardless of what the factors were, players think it might be beneficial.
“It was the least stressful option for us and our coach after her having her stroke, and it just benefited us,” Hallman said.
Other players see eye-to-eye with each other on the resolution for their advisor.
“The stress and the amount of pressure it is to carry two separate teams [is a lot] especially with everything that’s happening for the coach,” freshman Sophia Tapia said.
Although there were fewer girls trying out for the team, competition was still high.
“Fighting to just be on varsity is a hard thing … I wouldn’t say it was easier,” freshman Jordan Lupplace said.
Having less people there could be a blessing in disguise, players say.
“It was a lot more stress-free having fewer people there,” Hallman said.
Overall, not having a JV team has its contributions. Not only does it offer less stress for the players to compete with but it also removes the pressure weight off the coach’s back. Next year there will be more spots available.
“Most of our team is a lot of upperclassmen, so we would all be leaving together” Grant said.
